I do my best to stay energetic, optimistic, and full of life. However, sometimes, for one reason or another, I find myself feeling a little flat. Even when I recognize I’m feeling this way, sometimes it’s difficult to shake it.

I’ve found when I’m feeling a little flat, it helps to shake things up. The change in routine often bumps me out of my slump and gets the juices flowing again.

Below are 25 ways to shake things up and regain your fizz, quite a few of which I’ve done.

25 ways to shake things up and regain your fizz

  1. Join Toastmasters
  2. Go to a different meetup once a month (see meetup.comย for lots of great meetups)
  3. Sleep with your head at the foot of the bed
  4. Read, read, read (see my favorites hereย and a great list here)
  5. Read a different type of book (e.g. fiction vs nonfiction)
  6. Rearrange the furniture in your house
  7. Get a different style of haircut
  8. Call your spouse by a different nickname
  9. Get up early and go for a walk
  10. Hire a business or life coach
  11. Ask someone to be your mentor
  12. Volunteer at an animal shelter, the YMCA, or a national park
  13. Take your family on an outdoor adventure every 4-6 weeks
  14. Teach a Sunday school class
  15. Give a speech at your local Chamber of Commerce or Rotary Club
  16. Take 3 hours each month to review your progress on your goals
  17. Download Compass and plan your life together with your spouse
  18. Join the gym
  19. Attend church on Sundays
  20. Try a new side business in the next 30 days
  21. Start a blog
  22. Take yoga classes
  23. Greet every person you meet with a smile for one week straight
  24. Declutter and organize the basement
  25. Do theย Big 5, Daily 5, and Nightly 3 Practice

If you’re ever feeling like you’ve gone a little flat, give one of these a try. The fresh activity might be just what you need to get going again.

Have you done any of these? Anything you’d add to the list?

Great list, Michael! I have tried many of these ideas, and I’m especially partial to #13. I’m always on the lookout for new mom & pop restaurants and ice cream shops. It’s always fascinating to hear the owner’s stories when you go in and talk to them, not to mention the food is usually really good.

Hey Chris, love the idea of the mom and pop ice cream shop and I’m sure they love talking to you about how they got started! Now, time to check to freezer for ice cream… ๐Ÿ™‚

I love the meet-up idea. I’ve never heard of meet up.com. It looks like a great way for us to get more plugged into our new area. I agree with Chris, I like the outdoor adventure idea as well. The rearranging furniture is a favorite of mine, too. It’s amazing how something so minor makes such an impact. I might just do that right now. ๐Ÿ™‚

      Jody,

I’ve heard of meetup.com a while ago but haven’t ever gone to one of the meetups on there. Then a friend mentioned it recently so I was checking out some of their groups again. They have all types from business groups to fitness groups and many more.

Hope rearranging the furniture went well! ๐Ÿ™‚

Elijah and I rearranged his room. We had fun. Maybe I’ll do our bedroom tomorrow. ๐Ÿ™‚

Great list…I’ve hit quite a few and they have made a big impact. Starting a blog and making a commitment to reading and personal development have been huge!

Nice, Tom. Those have been huge for me too. Life changing!

Are you guys in Toastmasters now?

    • Michael Good June 5, 2013 at 2:08 pm

      Hey Jason,

Yes, I am. Joined a few months back and having fun! I remember you visited a meeting. Did you decide to join?

      • jasonvandehey June 5, 2013 at 2:45 pm

Yes, I officially joined and paid my dues. I’m working on my second speech right now. Great training for people who want to impact the world. Do you know anyone like that around here?

        • Michael Good June 5, 2013 at 10:08 pm

          Jason,

Yes, great training, for sure! I too am working on my second speech. Let me know how yours goes. Sounds like you’re struggling to connect with people locally?

          • jasonvandehey June 6, 2013 at 9:54 am

I’m finding some people, but I’m still looking for a group of like-minded people who are interested in creating Videos with the types of topics that I’m interested in. Toastmasters has been good. It’s a good way to learn how to tell stories. Also, there are one or two people who’s topics are similar to my own interests which is awesome.

          • Michael Good June 8, 2013 at 7:25 pm

Jason, I too have found some great people to connect with via Toastmasters. Hope you can find others to connect with on your video ambitions!

There is science behind breaking up routines. Something I do every day is change up my bathroom routine. Before I did this, my brain was on autopilot. Now I spend time praying or thinking of ideas for my future business ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Michael Good June 5, 2013 at 2:12 pm

      Alex,
My brain is definitely on auto-pilot for the first 20 minutes or so as I get done in the bathroom. Have you benefited from changing it up? Sounds like you can do some constructive thinking during that time. Might have to give that a try!

      • Alex Barker June 5, 2013 at 2:40 pm

Try simple things! Change up the way you wash your hair, style your hair, sing a song (no one listening anyway), brush your teeth first. Your body notices the change and wakes up. That my experience anyway.

        • Michael Good June 5, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Alex, I’m going to give it a try! I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks!
