Claudia’s Spartan Race Debut – IDC #19

October 9, 2012

This post is part of the IDC Project. The IDC Project’s mission is for us to take a stand for who we are and what we believe without worrying about what others may think. Read more about the IDC Project here and view completed IDC’s here.

I was recently challenged to do a Spartan Race by two friends, Alana Mokma and Jody Berkey. (You can watch their races here and here!)

While this IDC was a little different from some of our previous ones, it was certainly delightfully energizing! I ended up wet, muddy, and happy as a clam. Enjoy!

Question: When’s the last time you took on a challenge and did something a little crazy?

Good for you Claudia!  That’s awesome.  My son Matt and his girlfriend Phoebe do all kinds of races – they’re doing another half marathon next month – but in the summer they did a “color run” – they had to wear white and ran and people pelted them with paint!  They loved it.  Trying kettle bells is my craziest recent challenge and I actually love it – it’s my favorite workout.

    • Claudia Good October 9, 2012 at 11:43 am

Oh cool Ann! I’ve heard of kettle bells… but I’ve never tried it. What is it exactly??

      • Ann Musico October 9, 2012 at 2:09 pm

It’s a very cool whole body strength training combined with cardio.  You
use a kettle bell that you swing and lift different ways and there’s a
lot of squatting – you really use your body in 3 dimensions and it is a
great workout.  I have seen a lot of improvement and increase in muscle
and at my age that’s really important 🙂

Here’s a link where you can get a better idea of what it is http://exercise.about.com/library/blbeginnerkettlebell.htm

woa, sounds awesome Ann. Thanks for the link! I know my mom has talked about the importance of building muscle…

  • Ryan Ash October 9, 2012 at 10:40 am

Lol! Great job, Claudia! And Michael, you’re becoming quite the videographer!

    • Claudia Good October 9, 2012 at 11:44 am

hahaha yes Ryan, he planned out the activities and shots he looked at the video in the link above and got ideas from that 🙂 He did an awesome job, I agree!

    • Michael Good October 10, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Haha, thanks. We had fun with it!

      • Ryan Ash October 11, 2012 at 10:32 am

You’re welcome. And I can tell. What did Jude think of all of this?

        • Michael Good October 11, 2012 at 10:52 am

He was having fun until Claudia ran through the water. He didn’t like that very much. I think it scared him a bit.

          • Ryan Ash October 16, 2012 at 1:57 pm

            Yeah. I bet so. 🙂

  • AnnetteDarityGarber October 9, 2012 at 11:31 am

Loved it, Claudia! You still have that free-spirited, zany, actress side of you, and I love it! P.s. was Michael reading something he had written or by someone else?

    • Claudia Good October 9, 2012 at 11:41 pm

      Annette,
What actress side?! 😉 Yes, if you watch the other video attached there is a poem in the spartan video that he looked up and I guess found the original… really liked it…

  • Alana Mokma October 9, 2012 at 1:13 pm

OH MY DEAR DEAR CLAUDIA (and Michael!) you guys crack me up. I loved this. I love the thought you put into it. I’m going to watch it again and again and again. There were a few parts that cracked me up. I love how you celebrated after you threw the stick and the part at the end where you are waving the flag took me off-guard. I laughed out loud. This is great. Thank you for joining Jody and I in the challenge!

    • Claudia Good October 9, 2012 at 11:40 pm

My pleasure Alana! 🙂 Your video sparked the inspiration, so thanks for your creative spirit!!

Yes the flag moment was, quite the moment…

    • Claudia Good October 11, 2012 at 12:57 pm

You are sweet Matt thanks a lot!

  • Michael Wright October 20, 2012 at 7:52 am

Getting it done at the Playground!  This is so great and creative.  It was serious, yet fun to watch!  I love this element of challenge, competing in natural environments.   Honestly, it’s been awhile since I’ve done “crazy”.  It’s long overdue. 🙂

    • Claudia Good October 20, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Ha thanks Michael! It was a blast. We tried to imitate the real video with the poem and all 😉
Alright, I will expect to see your Spartan race posted next week! 😉

      • Michael Wright October 20, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Claudia,  this was the first I’d heard of the Spartan race.   Did you find an event on spartanrace.com?  There appears to be a race in Atlanta in 2013…calling my name?  I’ll investigate!

        • Michael Good October 23, 2012 at 3:04 pm

If you do it, Michael, let us know! That’d be great!
