It’s Really a Pilgrimage

Claudia and I were talking recently about the importance of enjoying the process. How we never want to find ourselves waiting to be happy until we reach a certain goal or benchmark.

That’s when Claudia said, “You know, it’s really a pilgrimage. It’s not about different levels, where some people are higher or lower on the ladder. Life is a journey and everyone is just on a different part of the path.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could take a shortcut and not go through any of the challenging times? We often look for signs that say, “Cut through this path and all your struggles will disappear.”

It doesn’t work that way though. Our legs get stronger as we walk up the hills. If we skipped parts, we wouldn’t build the endurance and wisdom needed for a successful pilgrimage.

Just remember, a life of fullness, happiness, and purpose is a pilgrimage. Every step plays a part in taking us to where we need to go. Each step matters, and learning to enjoy each step makes the journey one worth taking.

Are you enjoying your pilgrimage as much as you’d like? How could you enjoy it more?

Absolutely Michael – journey, pilgrimage – that is exactly what life is and since Jesus tells us He came to give us an abundant, overflowing life – it’s up to us to enjoy each step of the way. You are married to a very wise woman!

Thanks, Ann. Yes, I am married to an amazing woman! She helps me enjoy it every step of the way.

Sometimes I find myself doing exactly what you said about looking to the future too much and saying I’ll be happier when…. When I do, I have to remind myself to slow down and enjoy today. Not always an easy process. You two are wise beyond your years!
Michael, not sure if I sent this to you in the past but here is a musical camp, i.e. mostly guitar, held yearly in our town at a small private college. The guy that runs it is an acclaimed guitariest. Thought you might find something helpful or some ideas from this. http://www.flatpik.com/Steve-Kaufman-Acoustic-Kamp

      Donna,

No it’s not always an easy process, but everything is so much more enjoyable when we see it as a journey. I need to remind myself of this every single day!

I think I did see the site for the camp before. It looks like a great event! Thanks for sending it over again. I love seeing what others are doing in the industry.

I’m into the comparing game. I compare my success to those “below” and those “above”. In the end, it never pays off. Comparing my journey with other’s always leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
What’s helped me improve greatly is creating a laser-sighted focused plan. I try not to waste thoughts with jealous of others. To answer your question, I am enjoying life so much more recently. Thanks for the encouraging post. It made me think of why I’ve stopped jealous thoughts in their tracks.

Alex, I’m glad you found the post encouraging. I love the sound of your “laser-sighted
focused plan.” Sounds like you’re making progress. Keep it up!

Alex – I’m guilty of this one too. I even try to rationalize it…glad I’m not alone!

We’ve had some amazing things happen that looking back wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t take the path we did. It isn’t always fun to work through the challenges, but they make us who we are!

So true, challenges make us stronger. Hope you’re having a great week, Tom.
