Jarring And Upturning Change

June 28, 2012

We just changed the paper on our wall of inspiration today. It is clean, white and just waiting for wonderfully inspiring words and to be scribbled all over it.

It has been about 2 months since we changed it and I have been hesitating to do so because I was sentimental. A lot of work had gone into gathering and writing quotes and goals and encouragement. I didn’t want to just tear it down.

I noticed, however, that with time I had stopped actually reading what the words said. I just found myself looking at the pretty colors and how the words twirled about on the crisp white paper.

The impact was gone. It was time to change it.

Fresh inspiration was around the corner, waiting for an open space to pounce on. Waiting for the change to whisk away the old and make it new again.

If you don’t know already, I have become a huge fan of change.

This might sound strange coming from someone who used to protest every whisper of change. I love structure and predictability and see these things as healthy. But, I have also seen the benefits change brings and I cannot say no to such a wonderful thing.

It’s like a fresh spring rain pouring its lovely life giving waters through my heart and mind and I find things that were wilting starting to grow again.

Change tingles and jumps and sparks like lightening. It pricks and pokes and prods at the rusty and seemingly unmovable. It stretches and tears and fills holes that have been empty for too long.

It is as jarring and upturning. It is loud and in your face. It calls from every peak and trickles down streams.

With it comes life, new growth, fresh perspective, and new inspiration. It makes me think and rethink. It wakes me up from my bleary eyed slumber. It grabs me by the shoulders and violently shakes me. It gives me wings to fly again.

This is why I love change. It is not always easy, no, but it makes me a better person. This I know for sure.

Question: How has change affected you?

Change has never been easy for me – but I wonder if it is for anyone?  Anyway – as I’ve raised my children, they have dragged me (sometimes kicking and screaming – not literally!) along with them as they grew and changed.  Sometimes it scared the daylights out of me (every time each of them drove for the first time alone!) and on some level still does.  But I have learned to embrace it because it has always brought me to something better and made me leave something I’ve outgrown but didn’t realize it.  If left to my own devices – I’d still be 30-something we 3 children 8 and under!  I probably wouldn’t mind the 30-something part but I would miss the amazing young adults my kids have become and I’d never want to do that.

      Ann,
I think it depends on personality type. Some people readily embrace change and others hold back. My personality is one that holds back but I’ve had a LOT of big change in my life and have now been able to see how it has benefited me through the years. 😉

Ah yes, I like your perspective and how you embrace where your kids are at now. I bet it is such a joy to watch who they become. I can’t imagine the pride you must feel!

The change that scares me the most is career oriented.  However, I think it might be the most exciting too.   That is, what would my plan be should I need to bootstrap a business or look for another line of work.

I think this is true for most people Michael. That’s why most never take the risk to change…
Glad you are on the journey to seek what your heart desires to do!! It is indeed most exciting 😉
