Supercharge Your Thinking For New Ideas

May 15, 2012

Want to generate some radically new ideas for your life? Doing what you’ve always done isn’t going to cut it. Here’s an approach I came across in an article written by Dan Sullivan.

Take any goal you have and multiply it by 10.

Recently, I been thinking about finances and how I could generate a little extra money as my business shifts into a higher gear. For example, let’s say I had the goal to earn an extra $400 a month?

OK, maybe I could pick up a side job, focus on getting a new student or two, or sell a few things. While this approach has its place, I’m probably not going to come up with any ideas that are groundbreaking or revolutionary.

Instead, I now take the goal to earn an extra $400 and multiply it by 10. How can I earn an extra $4000 a month? Could I start working with a different type of client, launch a new product or service in my business, or get a job that would pay that much?

This approach opens me up to a new way of thinking and just might take me to a whole new level.

Say you want to read one book a month. Wouldn’t it be great to read ten books a month? Think of everything you could learn! How could you make that possible? Could you listen to audiobooks in the car or while you do the laundry?

Or, say you want to spend 30 additional minutes with your family each night. How could you spend an extra 5 hours a day them? Could you work from home, get a different job, or downsize so you don’t have to work so much?

This approach will shift our mindset and get us thinking beyond our current situation.

Question: What’s one goal you have and what would multiplying it by 10 look like?

I’ve been looking at ways to spend more time at home and to generate more income. The thought of generating another $1000 a month sounds awesome. But what if it was $10,000 a month? What could I do then?

I could quit my daytime job. I could work 5 months and have earned more than I have earned more than my current salary. It would look amazing…

It opens you up to a whole host of new ideas, Joe. What are some ways you could earn 10k a month?

      • Joe Lalonde May 15, 2012 at 10:51 am

Never really thought about it. But I could create a product that sells, perform a service such as coaching, buy some Facebook stock (-:, or create some websites that will bring in passive income.

Facebook stock, not a bad idea.

Whoa, sorry for the triple post. Feel free to delete the duplicates.

Wow, I’m sure that’ll be a sought after stock.

I thought with the triple post you were just really excited about Facebook going public. 🙂

I’m sure it will be. Still deciding whether or not to take the plunge. It’ll probably come down to the wire on Friday whether or not it happens. Here’s hoping it’s profitable.

Awesome Michael. I have a goal of generating an additional $5,000/per month from my coaching and income streams – multiplying that by 10 would mean generating an additional $50,000 per month. That would mean my husband could retire and I could stop working my “jobs” and focus fully on what I truly love to do.

    • Michael Good May 15, 2012 at 10:17 am

Very cool, Ann! Any crazy, hairbrained ideas to make that happen?

  • crystalmgood May 15, 2012 at 1:11 pm

wow, this is cool! It opens up a whole other realm of dreaming. I have deffinitally been in the place of dreaming up “just enough”, times it by ten and it and it open up a whole other level of possibilities!

    • Michael Good May 15, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Crystal, what if instead of 300 guests at your wedding, you had 3000?! That’d be some party!

      • crystalmgood May 16, 2012 at 8:41 am

haha! oh my gosh… that would be! not a bad idea 🙂

        • Claudia Good May 16, 2012 at 12:00 pm

hahahaaa… you would need a couple more chairs 😉

          • crystalmgood May 16, 2012 at 1:40 pm

just a few more. we would wipe out the amish man that we are renting tables & chairs from, haha!
how many guests did you guys have at your wedding? We’re working on the guest list now, it’s so tricky trimming it down, i just want everyone there! haha

          • Michael Good May 17, 2012 at 6:07 pm

I think we had around 200. Claudia will have to verify that!

We were actually considering a super small wedding, like 40 people.

This has me thinking that my mindset is still too small when it comes to entrepreneurial success. I have the “just enough” mindset. What if instead of Karen and I selling our remaining stock of 2,000 cookbooks, we sold had to make several more runs and sold 20,000?!

    • Michael Good May 16, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Yeah Chris, I too can slip into that mindset. That would be awesome to sell that many cookbooks! I bet if you get in my front of the right people, it’s not that far out of reach.

Michael, I liked that interview with Dan on the Success CD. It made me think about all the corporate meetings I’d been in where they’d try to increase revenue by 10%. This is a totally new way of thinking. Go BIG or go home, they say.

One of my goals was to start side income to generate only a measly $6k/year. OK that would now be $60K/year. I can’t say I’ve come up with ideas yet, but I’m working on it!

Try this little brain teaser for this week, Michael: Ask yourself the question “WHY am I making an extra $4,000 a month?” a few times everyday for a week. Sounds hokey, but it’s worked for me before and I’m counting on it sparking my brain with some ideas soon!

    • Michael Good May 16, 2012 at 10:51 pm

Cool idea, Michael! Is it to generate more ideas?

The “why” behind what we do is huge so I can see it sparking a new drive, purpose, and vision for sure.

      • Michael Wright May 17, 2012 at 6:21 am

The idea for asking questions comes from the book The Secret Code of Success. It basically has the premise that our subconscious brains MUST answer any question we ask it, so why not ask it good questions? It’s not a hocus pocus magic formula, but it may help to “reprogram” any blocking negative subconscious emotions/patterns that may be in the way.

Not a magic formula by any means…I look at it like adding another spice onto my plate of food.

        • Michael Good May 17, 2012 at 6:04 pm

I like it, Michael. Reminds me of “The Strangest Secret” by Earl Nightingale. He talks about thinking about a goal you have without focusing on the specifics of how to achieve it. I don’t think it’s hocus pocus either. An approach like this has its place; our minds are more powerful than we realize.

  • Ryan Ash May 23, 2012 at 1:20 am

Very interesting! I really identified with your “make $400 extra a month” example. Thinking that way versus $4,000 a month makes a HUGE difference in mindset. I’m really going to have to ponder on this one for a while. This post is probably worth a lot more than the “price of admission!”

    • Michael Good May 23, 2012 at 7:24 am

Well thanks, Ryan. 😉 For me, this exercise has been a good way to brainstorm and come up with ideas that are outside of the box.

      • Ryan Ash May 23, 2012 at 9:56 am

Something I’ve noticed is that it seems the less that we’re burdened down with “stuff” the bigger our “box” becomes.

        • Michael Good May 23, 2012 at 11:00 am

That’s wisdom, Ryan. Totally agree. Claudia and I were just talking last night how with less stuff we’re more flexible and free to do want we want. There’s a significant level of freedom, flexibility, creativity, and energy that comes with a simplistic lifestyle.

          • Ryan Ash May 23, 2012 at 11:24 am

Thanks! We’ve already started seeing benefits, and we’re just getting started.
