Question: How can we avoid an improvisational life?

    Be Intentional!

Michael took my answer!! Being intentional – doing what we do “on purpose” is definitely the way to avoid being improvisational. Planning is good too!

Yes, I agree with all here, “Intentional” –> That word has probably done so much for me I can’t even count the ways. If we’re intentional, then we’re pro-active, and when we’re pro-active there’s less change for mistakes.

Absolutely, Rob. Too often we get caught up with just doing what everyone else is doing and not stopping for a minute and thinking about whether or not it’s what we really want.

Funny how that works isn’t it? Why is it so easy to overlook ourselves; do you think it’s all about confidence? Or maybe we don’t want to be the one to have the spot light put on us if we fail. If something goes wrong we can just slip back into shadows because it wasn’t the chance we took anyway. Man, Intentionality takes work!

Haha! Yeah, I hear you. I think it’s that it’s our human nature to take the easiest route, to go with the flow. I want to fit in. It takes real effort and perseverance to go beyond this.

I think this is why it’s so huge to be intentional about who we spend time with. Because, even if I put effort forth and persevere in not just going with the flow, there will be times when I do. However, if the people around me are going the same general direction I’m going as well, I won’t get thrown off track so much.

Plus, social proof or social influence is huge. It’s so easy to think that if everyone else is doing it, it must be the way to go.

I think you’re right! There’s so much pressure from social influence that I guess the easiest route would be to just give in. So surrounding ourselves with forward thinkers, or people who are performing at a level we want to be at should be one of our first intentional moves.
