Congrats on hiring the accountant and so glad it paid off! I always do my taxes myself, however I may need to invest in a pro next year.

      Michael,
Ya, sooooooooo thankful that we did it, we didn’t know what we were doing… it got too complicated. Michael was wise to “pull the plug” and say that we needed help. 😉

Even though I do all the budgeting and financial stuff in our house – I draw the line at the taxes! Since I do the books for one small business as a side job – I have my fill of reconciling statements and filing paperwork – and we have always had an accountant to do our taxes. I agree – I like to be hands on and do as much as I am capable of doing, on my own – however, since time is my move valuable resource – I would much rather have a professional who really knows what they’re doing, take over tasks that are not in my particular area of gifting and free me up to do what I really need to do. Good for you – taking this step!

      Haha thanks Ann!
      Lesson learned 🙂

I’ve learned about hiring a professional the hard way too.

I never had to learn this for accounting; I knew from day one I couldn’t do my taxes, so I started using an account once I got my first real job. For me, it was house repairs. I always tried to be Mr. Handyman…only to have to pay a professional to come in to fix the original problem, as well as the new one I created 🙂

Ahhh, yes, the ‘simple’ house repair gone bad. 😉

Tell me, what was the worst one?

      • Kent Julian May 8, 2012 at 11:53 am

You want a list?! Worse was probably a plumbing issue…busted pipes, damaged ceiling, etc. Just thinking about it again gives me the willies 🙂

ohhhhhhh dear!!!!! Water coming through the ceiling just isn’t good 😉 No. Never good.

Great point about hiring a professional, though I have not needed to yet. But I plan on hiring one in the future.

      Dan,
Nice. Its great to know when we need help and be willing to seek it out! It was a huge weight lifted from our shoulders 😉

Oh, I was always trying to do things on my own, and I did for a while. I gotta tell you that since I’ve hired my own accountant, taxes are no longer that dreadful, and plus he can spot things that I never would have seen. For anything if it’s not in my strengths or liking, really I have to humble myself sometimes and say let’s let a professional take care of this.

      Rob,
We are just venturing into the world of hiring awesome people. I think in the past we often went the cheapest route and the most practical. Hiring someone else can be neither of those things… but I am convinced is still a blessing! The job gets done, we don’t have to worry about it and our time (which is so valuable) can be used better elsewhere.

      • Rob Clinton May 23, 2012 at 4:58 pm

You and me both! Cheapest and practical used to make sense for everything, but just like food… Cheap food wasn’t always good. If you wanted the good stuff and really invest in your health, you had to be willing to do just that; invest…

The job gets done, and things get done right… and then, we can sleep soundly knowing 🙂
