How A Wolverine Taught Me To Live

June 19, 2012

I saw a documentary this evening, on wolverines. Yes, wolverines.

These animals are so radically awesome, I thought I needed to write a post about them! Trust me, if your mind is starting to wander already, there is something to be learned here, so stick with me!

Basically until today the only wolverine I had ever really heard of was from X-men. Now I know why they named an action figure after this crazy animal.

Here are 5 cool wolverine features that I could use more of in my own life.

1. They don’t back down from a challenge.

Wolverines average 30 lbs and they have been known to take down a moose solo. They face grizzlies head on and if a mountain is in their path, the just climb over it. No going around, they face it head on.

They almost have superhero type strength and endurance.

2. They keep moving.

4 mph is the normal constant speed for a wolverine. They will often run 40 miles a day to get where they are going and they get there fast. They don’t labor or waffle. They just keep moving forward, onward.

3. They have attributes of a bear, a cat, a weasel, and a skunk and yet, they standout from all of them as wildly different.

In other words, they are hard to define, put a finger on. They are almost indescribable.

I like indescribable, or at least taking a long time to describe. It’s like the person that you can’t stop telling people about but you just can’t quite put your finger on why you like them so much, you just do.

It’s cause they are incomparable.

4. They eat bones

Wolverines thrive in the coldest of cold northern climates. They will scavenge in the snow to find dead animals killed in avalanches and devour the whole carcass including the bones.

In other words, they know how to bear down and take advantage of the lean times and don’t complain when they only have a bone to gnaw on. After all, that bone will get them through the winter!

5. They are like phantoms

People track wolverines for years and often never even see one. They are rare, they stay on the move, and live in such remote areas that they have gone fairly unstudied because of it.

I think there is something to be gained by staying a little mysterious and phantom like.

It is refreshing to talk to people who remain somewhat of a mystery. They unfold slowly with time and trust that is built with a deep relationship. They open as a flower does in spring.

So there you have it. Learn from anything and everything!

I never thought I would write a post about wolverines. But hey, I learn from anything and everything! Maybe my next post will be about dirty socks and why they make me happy, who knows?! 🙂

Question: What about you, what is the strangest topic you have ever written on? (Please include a link.)

Wolverines are pretty stinking awesome. The animal, the X-Man, and the football team. Go Blue!

The strangest topic for me would have to be the movie Bubble Boy. I used the storyline to give examples of what to do to improve yourself. http://www.jmlalonde.com/are-you-a-bubble-boy/

I know! They are sweet and totally push all boundaries!

Sweet post Joe! I love that topic!!! I’ve seen people sluff along in life and then an event or a health crisis or a death totally shakes them by the shoulders and they wake up out of their stupor and make a 180!

Thanks for the reminder to keep pushing the boundaries of what my little brain thinks is possible!

Man, this is awesome!  What was the name of the documentary?

I once wrote about Komodo dragons – it’s offline, so maybe I’ll post it up soon.  I like how you said learn from anything and everything.  So true!  I’ve really been experiencing that, especially these past few months.

      Matt
It was “Wolverine – Chasing The Phantom”  It was sweet!

I like the sound of the dragon post. I don’t know anything about them either…

Ohhh – what experiences have taught you in the past few months???

Recently I overheard a conversation about some lottery ticket winner.  The conversation was basically gossip.  I whipped out my phone and wrote 90% of the post right there, called “Why listening to gossip is bad for your health.”  I think it’s the most recent post on my site.

I also started vacuuming, sweeping, and doing other household things in opposite grip, or with my opposite hand.  I taught myself how to brush my teeth with my non-dominant hand a few years ago.  That surprisingly takes a long time to get good at.. took my almost 9 months LOL.

          Wow Matt,
That is cool! Makes you feel uncomfortable doing normally comfortable things… interesting, I like it!

Wolverines are cool! And you just made them really cool, by talking about them in that light.

As far as strange topics, I guess the one yesterday about my daughter Alena drawing a picture of mommy naked, and I was able to find inspiration out of that and write a post :)…  Here’s the link: http://www.180coach.com/alena-drew-a-picture-of-mommy-naked/

hahaha that was funny and clever 😉 What a cutie!

So Rob, is she a “why” girl more than your boys were, or did they all hit that stage at 4?

      • Rob Clinton June 21, 2012 at 1:45 am

Thanks Claudia…. And I’m trying to recall, Nicholas did ask alot, but I think she’s got everybody beat with the “Why’s”… Maybe it’s because it’s happening now, and it’s so obvious to me at the moment… 🙂

        • Claudia Good June 28, 2012 at 1:56 pm

hahaha, yes what is happening at the moment sometimes screams so loud you forget there was a past or that there will be a future 😉

    • Joe Lalonde June 19, 2012 at 4:50 pm

Whoops! That would be a crazy topic. Don’t think my wife would let me blog about an incident like that.

      • Rob Clinton June 21, 2012 at 1:45 am

        Crazy topic indeed! 🙂

As a graduate of the university of Michigan (the wolverines.) I love this post.

  • Claudia Good June 19, 2012 at 4:11 pm

    Cool Ann,
I’ll be looking forward to it 😉

Oh my word, those squirrels ARE sooooo persistent! I hope they have sought other places to birth other than your soffits!! That feels very invasive… I know!

We had squirrels that nested in the roof of our first apartment years ago. We were in a 1bdrm 3rd floor apartment so they were right above us scratching and digging all the time. They pushed away all the insulation in the roof, so our heating bill was through the roof (literally!)

One day a flying squirrel got into the apartment and cornered me in the living room! I was perched on the backing of the couch till Michael and his friends came to my rescue.

When they finally got the squirrels out of the apartment I got attacked by the mites from their nests. I would itch and itch laying in bed and wake up with bites all over my legs. Apparently only sensitive skin reacts because Michael never got one bite!

So, yes… us and squirrels go way back 😉

Claudia, I haven’t written any strange or indescribable posts, yet, but maybe this is my cue. Maybe I’ll go buy a Wolverine suit and wear it around town and write about the reactions I get …ha!

This is a very neat post.  My dad and I used to watch tons of nature shows growing up, but never saw one of the Wolverines.

    • Claudia Good June 28, 2012 at 1:57 pm

hahahahahaaa that would be AWESOME!!! We would have to feature it as an IDC for sure!!!

  • Claudia Good June 28, 2012 at 1:55 pm
