An obvious benefit of self-employment is working whenever it’s most convenient. While it hasn’t happend overnight, I’ve slowly built my business to the point where I have full control of when I do and don’t work.

I have three girls at home (ages three, five, and seven) and I want to spend as much time with them as possible while they’re growing up. The older two are in schools that follow the traditional calendar and I’ve used it to intentionally spend more time with them.

Realist or Pessimist

April 2, 2012

“I’m not a pessimist; I’m a realist.” You’ve probably heard that said before in response to someone being accused of being a miser or a killjoy. I know I’ve heard it before and I’m always skeptical when I hear it. I think it’s just the socially acceptable way to be a downer.

Are there cold, hard facts? Yes, there are. These do need to be taken into account, for sure. But, if you’re in a difficult situation and you stay focused on just the facts for too long, it’s going to be difficult to move forward.

Building An Unbreakable Team In Marriage

April 1, 2012

A team of oxen is amazingly strong. When pulling a load together, they can pull three times the amount than each would be able to separately!

Lately I’ve been comparing this to marriage. In marriage we are two individuals, obviously. Two individuals can get places. Two individuals working together as a team, however, can hardly be stopped!

How important is this “being on the same team?” After all, doesn’t being married automatically make you on the same team?

I’ve been able to tweak my teaching technique and try different ways of encouraging my students to see what they respond to the best and to see what generates the best results as well.

Comparison And Blog Envy

March 28, 2012

I was reading a blog today about a girl that writes and takes polaroid pictures. The pictures on her site made me feel happy inside. The colors were warm and reminded me of a summer day.

I liked how this girl had ideas and skills and had monetized them.

Seeking Discomfort

March 26, 2012

It’s so easy in life to gravitate towards what is easy and comfortable. It takes much less effort than challenging ourselves and trying something different. By taking the easy route, we can just coast along.

However, I’ve learned by my own experience and by absorbing the writings of others that seeking comfort does not lead to a life that is fulfilling, purposeful, and impactful.

Which Name Would You Choose?

March 25, 2012

I once heard a story about someone who called his wife “Sweet Maria.” That was her nickname. Sweet Maria. That is how he referenced her to other people, that is how he spoke to her. My Sweet Maria, he would say.

When I heard that I thought, “That would be amazing to be described in that way!”

So then I wondered, “Did she become sweet because he calls her so, or was she sweet already?”
