Join Me for a 21 Day Productivity Experiment

October 1, 2012

I’ll make no bones about it, I struggle with focus when working on my business. I’m often scattered and overwhelmed by everything I want to do. A recent post I read really brought this issue to light and now I’m going to do something about it.

I read a story of how more than 100 years ago Charles Schwab, president of Bethlehem Steel, hired Ivy Lee to help his company with efficiency. Lee told Schwab he’d need only 10 minutes with each of his executives and Schwab would only have to pay him if his advice worked.

Lee left telling Schwab to evaluate the effectiveness of his services in 3 months. And, at that point, send him a check in the amount of what he thought his advice was worth.

Digital Relationships Verses Face to Face

September 28, 2012

Recently, I joined a local men’s accountability group. It has reminded me of the importance of connecting with others face to face, not just digitally.

Don’t get me wrong, I love technology, social media, and blogs and have found meaningful relationships this way. However, it takes relationships longer to develop if they’re only online.

Also, there is just something about literally sitting across from another person and seeing the life in their eyes. You can’t always get this with online relationships.

It has been really neat to for me to actually get to meet some of the people with whom I’ve previously only connected with online, like the time I went to NYC, Colorado, and Virginia. This has taken these friendships to a new level.

Question: What do your meaningful relationships look like? Are they online or in person?

I’m Just Being Responsible

September 27, 2012

For months, I have been pondering what responsibility looks like when it comes to a job. It seems the idea of what is and isn’t responsible in this area is gray to most.

Some view responsibility as staying in a job for years that is unfulfilling and life sucking, just for a steady source of income for their families.

I don’t think we have been created with such splendidly specific gifts to just trudge through life and work this way. People often end up putting their best on a shelf, only to be brought down in the last few years of their lives. Their dreams are stashed away and only brought out on weekends or the two weeks of vacation they get per year.

I’m Great! – IDC #18

September 26, 2012

This post is part of the IDC Project. The IDC Project’s mission is for us to take a stand for who we are and what we believe without worrying about what others may think. Read more about the IDC Project here and view completed IDC’s here.

For our most recent IDC project, we answered the common question, “How are you?” by saying, “Great!” for seven days. Not only that, we invited our readers to join us! There were quite a few that signed up and we kept each other accountable and reminded one another of our intended response.

An over-the-top I’m great

What if we didn’t feel great? No problem. Claudia wrote this post recently which helped and we tried a little perspective on for size. The fact of the matter is, we all have many things to be grateful for. We decided to focus on those for the 7 days.

Helen Keller On Happiness

September 25, 2012

In light of my recent post on happiness, I thought this quote deserved a post of its own.

“Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” ~ Helen Keller

Question: What is your worthy purpose?

Short-term Goals Done Right

September 24, 2012

Short-term goals are the key to getting to you to your bigger long-term goals and dreams. They can be the catalyst that gets you off your bum in planning mode and starting to actually do something which brings momentum and inspiration.

The length of the type of short-term goal I’m referring to is 7 to 30 days.

2. Explosive growth
