On Becoming An Integer

February 23, 2012

In the past, I was a different person depending on what group of people I was with. If I was with friends, I was one way. If I was at work, I was another. If I was with family, I was yet another.

It’s not that I was trying to be dishonest or trick people, but instead, this response was rooted in insecurity and wanting to make others happy.

Wanting to make others happy can be a really good thing, however for me, it came at quite a cost. For me, it meant getting my identity muddled and, eventually, lost.

What The Shiny Object Syndrome Taught Me About Life

February 22, 2012

Life has a strange way of lulling me into mediocrity. Or does it? I keep thinking that I need to enjoy the moment so much that I don’t even enjoy the moment. Or I have this long drawn out dance in my mind about how I need to be intentional and feel what I am feeling. In the midst of my thinking that I need to be feeling, I am totally absent from actually feeling for the better part of a day.

There is this weird absent from the body present with the body thing that goes on with me, and maybe you too. Or it might just be me. Things happen. I feel things that I don’t know if I was meant to feel. You know when you barge in on a conversation and realize that you are NOT welcome?

What I Learned From Brewing My Own Beer

February 20, 2012

In an effort to act on our goal of de-cluttering for 2012, I decided to sell one of the items that has been collecting dust in our basement. My homebrew beer kit.

This was something I was really excited about a couple of years ago. I enjoy a good craft beer and had some friends who were into brewing their own. Therefore I thought I would enjoy it too.

As I turns out, I prefer drinking good beer that someone else has brewed rather than doing it myself. It’s quite a time-consuming and tedious process.

I Am Sorry. Period.

February 19, 2012

I have been thinking a lot lately about responsibility. Taking 100% responsibility. In other words, not playing the blame game with anyone or any situation.

I can honestly say that it is consistently the hardest thing I have ever done. Let’s just say being corrected or criticized is my worst nightmare. I take it hard. I fight really hard to find blame in someone else. This has been a consistent habit of mine for quite some time now. In all honesty, it really hasn’t worked out so well for me.

I’ve come to my 32nd year in life and I am ready to try something new. I think. But, it is downright hard to look yourself in the eyes and say, “Self, I’ve been doing this wrong for a while now, I need to change.” It can actually be pretty scary.

Video Results Of Photo Exercise II

February 15, 2012

This is my take on the photo exercise suggested by Gary Barkalow. This is a way to better understand yourself and what you are attracted to. Knowing these things will help give you insight into your heart’s calling.

The Exercise:

Glance through a series of  stock photos and save any that immediately grab your attention or make you take a second look. Next, go through and look for any themes or correlation between the photos.

Here’s the easiest way to do this:

  1. Create a new folder on your desktop.
  2. View millions of stock photos here.
  3. Right-click on the photos that grab your attention and click “save image as” selecting the folder you just created.
  4. Spend as much time as you like looking though pictures. I recommend 30 minutes.
  5. Next, go to that folder and review the photos looking for common themes. Do the photos include people or things? Do they include lots of color or little? Do they include action or tranquility? What emotions do they evoke?

These are the pictures that immediately grabbed my attention:

Video Results Of Photo Exercise

February 14, 2012

Recently I did an experiment and found the results to be very intriguing. While listening to a series on one’s calling in life by Gary Barkalow, he suggested a photo exercise.

The exercise is to glance through a series of  stock photos and save any that immediately grab your attention or make you take a second look. Take your time, but move fast through the pictures and save only the ones that immediately catch your eye.

Here’s the easiest way to do this:

  1. Create a new folder on your desktop.
  2. View millions of stock photos here.
  3. Right-click on the photos that grab your attention and click “save image as” selecting the folder you just created.

Next, go to that folder and review the photos looking for common themes. Do the photos include people or things? Do they include lots of color or little? Do they include action or tranquility? What emotions do they evoke?

These are the pictures that immediately grabbed my attention:
